It's President's Day and my kids wanted something patriotic to celebrate the day. I don't exactly think of President's Day as a foodie holiday, so I was stumped for a minute. I stuck my head inside the fridge and looked around when I saw the strawberries and blueberries. Inspiration struck! I had red and blue... what could I do to make white... bananas of course!
I didn't really feel like cooking or baking so a smoothie was the easiest and quickest thing I could make with all these ingredients. I decided layering it in red, white and blue would be a pretty cool treat for the kids. I have tried making layered smoothies before and they have not always turned out pretty. Since then, I have learned a few things to help make a layered smoothie.
First of all you have to give your smoothie layers some density. I did this by using frozen fruit instead of fresh fruit. I always freeze extra berries and bananas for smoothies and this was a perfect time to use some up. The second tip to layering is using a spoon to help gently pour in the new layer. I simply held the spoon in the glass and allowed the smoothie to hit the spoon first before it poured into the glass. Voila... you have a layered smoothie.
Ingredients:
Strawberry (Red) Smoothie:
1 cup frozen strawberries
1 cup almond milk
1/3 cup low fat plain or vanilla yogurt
sweetener of choice (honey, agave, Splenda etc...)
Banana (White) Smoothie:
1 large banana cut into slices and frozen
1 cup almond milk
1/3 cup low fat plain or vanilla yogurt
sweetener of choice (honey, agave, Splenda etc...)
Blueberry (Blue) Smoothie:
1 cup frozen blueberries
1 cup almond milk
1/3 cup low fat plain or vanilla yogurt
sweetener of choice (honey, agave, Splenda etc...)
Directions:
Step 1: Using a blender, blend together the banana smoothie first. Transfer to a large glass until assembly of layered smoothie.
Step 2: Next blend together the ingredients for the strawberry smoothie and transfer to a large glass.
Step 3: Finally blend together the blueberry smoothie.
Step 4: Assemble layers by placing the red or blue smoothie on the bottom of a glass. Then slowly pour the banana smoothie over the back of a spoon as the next layer. **The spoon helps the smoothie gently go into the glass. Finally use the spoon again to pour the final layer over the banana layer. Serve immediately and enjoy.
