Spicy Sweet Potato Chips

Yum
Have you ever tried to just eat one potato chip?  Well, I have never been successful at doing that because I love a good crunchy and salty snack.  I tried to make some "healthier" chips by substituting sweet potatoes for regular white potatoes. Unfortunately they fell shy of being truly healthy when I couldn't get my oven to cooperate with me so I could successfully bake them crispy the way I like.  Yes.. I did finally decide to take the plunge and deep fry them. Okay... they were a little healthy and a little guilty... but they still were fantastic.

Ingredients:
4 sweet potatoes skinned and thinly sliced
1 tsp of cumin powder
red chili powder to taste
1/4 tsp of turmeric powder
lots of black pepper
salt to taste (after frying)
oil for frying

Note: You will require the use of a mandolin slicer to give you thin even slices.

Directions:
Slice and marinate the sweet potato slices with the spices. Heat canola oil to 350-375 degrees and deep fry until golden brown and crispy (2-4 minutes).  Drain on a paper towel and sprinkle sea salt while hot and serve. Enjoy

  2. Those look great.:) Love sweet potato chips!
Would love to hear your thoughts on the mandolin. I am debating getting one. To me, they mean one thing= bandages on my fingers, but I do see more and more recipes that suggest using it.

  9. I adore potato chips. Put chocolate and chips in front of me and you'll see pretty quickly why I don't care about chocolate. Chips are my thing. I like the idea of healtifying them, if even a little. These look fantastic.

  10. I am going to make some of these chips today. I have sweet potatoes in the pantry. Instead of frying them in oil, I will use my Microwave Chip Maker. Kimberly, there are Mandolines and other slicers that have protectors on them to prevent accidents.

  11. I make this very often (simplified version, of course. I just sprinkle with a little bit of salt after frying). The reason why I never have it posted on my blog is because they never last more than 10 minutes in my household. My kids love them. I like your version, I want to try it next time :)

  12. Those look ridiculously good! That color alone is a good reason to make them--plus the fact that they're Passover-friendly is a bonus, since I've been eyeing everyone's Easter treats with envy.

  19. I love potatoes and sweet potatoes and I don't mind the work of deep frying to have chips like this at all! But the downside of it is that I can eat the entire batch all by myself while deep frying! LOL. Yours look wonderful. But again, I'd be finishing the whole thing in a matter of 3 minutes. =)

    1. You can definitely try to bake them in the oven. I could not get them work in the oven so I decided to fry them. I have seen them done in the oven so it is doable.
