Have you ever tried to just eat one potato chip? Well, I have never been successful at doing that because I love a good crunchy and salty snack. I tried to make some "healthier" chips by substituting sweet potatoes for regular white potatoes. Unfortunately they fell shy of being truly healthy when I couldn't get my oven to cooperate with me so I could successfully bake them crispy the way I like. Yes.. I did finally decide to take the plunge and deep fry them. Okay... they were a little healthy and a little guilty... but they still were fantastic.
Ingredients:

4 sweet potatoes skinned and thinly sliced
1 tsp of cumin powder
red chili powder to taste
1/4 tsp of turmeric powder
lots of black pepper
salt to taste (after frying)
oil for frying
Note: You will require the use of a mandolin slicer to give you thin even slices.
Directions:

Slice and marinate the sweet potato slices with the spices. Heat canola oil to 350-375 degrees and deep fry until golden brown and crispy (2-4 minutes). Drain on a paper towel and sprinkle sea salt while hot and serve. Enjoy

I love the sound of these chips. I think I could easily have the whole bowl by myself.
ReplyDeleteThey look gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThose look great.:) Love sweet potato chips!
ReplyDeleteWould love to hear your thoughts on the mandolin. I am debating getting one. To me, they mean one thing= bandages on my fingers, but I do see more and more recipes that suggest using it.
My boyfriend would DEVOUR these! Spicy and sweet! YUM! I hope you had a great Easter! HUGS!
ReplyDeleteYou can't buy these in a store, that's for sure. I love the spices combination! Yum!
ReplyDeleteWow! These look incredible. Hard to say they've been made at home. Love the hint of cumin you've added.
ReplyDeleteJust buzzed you! Cannot get these amazing sweet potato chips out of my mind. Got to have them...will be making them since I have the thin mandoline slicer! Yumm!!!
ReplyDeleteWow Ramona, these look fantastic, nice and crispy. Stop by sometime for a chat. Have a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteFeel like munching some..
ReplyDeleteMmm, you know I love these! :) Sweet potatoes are on of my true loves!
ReplyDeleteI adore potato chips. Put chocolate and chips in front of me and you'll see pretty quickly why I don't care about chocolate. Chips are my thing. I like the idea of healtifying them, if even a little. These look fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI am going to make some of these chips today. I have sweet potatoes in the pantry. Instead of frying them in oil, I will use my Microwave Chip Maker. Kimberly, there are Mandolines and other slicers that have protectors on them to prevent accidents.
ReplyDeleteI make this very often (simplified version, of course. I just sprinkle with a little bit of salt after frying). The reason why I never have it posted on my blog is because they never last more than 10 minutes in my household. My kids love them. I like your version, I want to try it next time :)
ReplyDeleteThose look ridiculously good! That color alone is a good reason to make them--plus the fact that they're Passover-friendly is a bonus, since I've been eyeing everyone's Easter treats with envy.
ReplyDeleteThese look so good and they would almost impossible to not overeat. Hope your holiday weekend was fun!
ReplyDeleteWow!!looks so tempting and feel like munching....
ReplyDeleteI am picky about my potato chips but once I find the right kind I cannot help myself. These are just how I like them. I have been wanting to make homemade since I got my mandolin. This just put me back on track.
ReplyDeleteThese sound delicious! The spicy and sweet combo sounds addicting!
ReplyDeleteYou are girl after my heart! Love sweet potato chips but your seasoning is quite unique. Love the chili - turmeric combination. Going to be trying this recipe!
ReplyDeleteI love sweet potato fries, chips, you name it! And I love the spice you added to these!! Please send a bag my way! :)
ReplyDeleteI love potatoes and sweet potatoes and I don't mind the work of deep frying to have chips like this at all! But the downside of it is that I can eat the entire batch all by myself while deep frying! LOL. Yours look wonderful. But again, I'd be finishing the whole thing in a matter of 3 minutes. =)
ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful. There is nothing quite like home made potato chips. You rock!
ReplyDeleteI have never made chips at home and your post is tempting me to try it. Sweet potatoes sound like an interesting substitute to potatoes. Yours look really tempting with their crispiness and spices.
ReplyDeleteso tyempting and flavorful chiops
ReplyDeleteONE potato chip? Are you KIDDING me? LOL
ReplyDeleteThese sound awesome and even though they are fried, sweet potatoes are so nutritious I am sure they are still good for you! I will have to try this! But not when I am by myself and could eat the whole batch :-)
ReplyDeletewe really like sweet potato and this really great new way to cook it. :-)
ReplyDeleteLOVE these, Ramona! I cannot buy the bags of these chips...I just can't resist! But I'd love to make them :)
ReplyDeleteCan I please have a humongous bag of those?
ReplyDeleteis there an alternative to frying these and get the same results?
ReplyDeleteYou can definitely try to bake them in the oven. I could not get them work in the oven so I decided to fry them. I have seen them done in the oven so it is doable.
