Watergate Salad

Yum
Watergate Salad or as I call it "I am not a crook" Watergate Salad was created in the 1970's by the Kraft Company.  It is a light and sweet tasting salad that is made with pistachio pudding, marshmallows, crushed pineapple and whipped cream.   Watergate is the name given to the political scandal in the United States in the 1970s, which led to the resignation of President Nixon.  Although the name Watergate Salad was not coined by the Kraft Company, the name stuck out of popularity and it is still enjoyed today at many potlucks and parties. I recently made this for my 1970's Disco themed party and we all enjoyed it very much.

Ingredients from the original Kraft Recipe:

1 can (20 oz.) crushed pineapple with juice
1 pkg.  (3.4 oz.) JELL-O Pistachio Flavor Instant Pudding
1 cup JET-PUFFED Miniature Marshmallows
1/2 cup  chopped PLANTERS Pecans
1-1/2 cups thawed COOL WHIP Whipped Topping

Directions:
Combine the crushed pineapple with juice and the pistachio jell-o pudding  together until pudding is mixed in well.  Then add the marshmallows, pecans and cool whip topping and combine well.   Refrigerate for 1-2 hours before serving. Served chilled. Enjoy.

  1. Interesting - I had absolutely never heard of it, since I grew up in Germany, post the 70s. I don't like pineapples, either, or marshmallows, so I'd probably not be into this. Pistachio though... yum! I didn't even know there was pistachio jell-o pudding!

  12. haha I've never heard this called watergate salad but I know exactly what it is from countless parties as a kid. Some kinda variation was around, sometimes with green jello or yellow jello instead of pudding. Oh kiddy memories. thanks for the nostalgia! :)

  17. Girl - you just transported me back into the 70's! I remember when this recipe came out (yes, I was a teenager in the 70's). EVERYONE was making it. You couldn't have a holiday or go to a party without it being on the table. I have to admit that it was one of the dishes that actually made you feel guilty for liking it and I did like it! :) Good for you for bringing into the 21st century!

  19. Ramona....I'm with MJ! Transported right back to the '70s! This really was so popular back then. And I also remember making Jello pistachio pudding when I was a kid (using a hand held rotary beater!) LOL. How fun! I love this blast from the past....and will have to make it again soon! : )
